Rachel Mills
Senior Lecturer
Rachel is a producer of animation and has project managed Animation for a wide range of audiences including Children’s and Adult TV, web series, and e-learning content. She has worked as a freelance animator and producer for over 15 years including work for Aardman, and commercial clients across the southwest.
Rachel set up a content development studio, Buttercup Learning in 2019 to engage children and families in eco/natural world e-learning. She has experience of delivering well-received environmental animated projects as live briefs for animation students. Her start-up was awarded a competitive place on the pre-incubation scheme with Natwest Back her Business programme supported by SETsquared Bristol and is currently being supported and mentored till November 2020. She is developing a UK first; a non-fiction augmented reality children’s book/phonics scheme working with UWE alumni across the creative industries, scientists and early years advisors.
Rachel’s interest in animation developed at Glasgow School of Art whilst studying for a BA Hons Visual Communication degree between 1994-98 specialising in Illustration and Animation. Her current research interests are in virtual reality/augmented reality and mixed reality storytelling, rapid prototyping and developing technologies for moving image.
Since joining UWE in 2006 she has project managed many live briefs with studios and clients to ensure students gain real-world animation production experience including working with the BBC, regional studios and national charities and University partnerships.
