Four UWE Animation films were up for the award, with Alison Loke’s ‘Kopi Girl’ winning the top prize at a ceremony in Everyman Cinema on Tues 15th March. Her film will now be in the running for the national awards, taking place at the Southbank centre in June.

Alison said, ‘I am incredibly honoured that Kopi Girl won, and would like to thank my talented animators; Martyna Sikonczyk, Ho Ching Kwok, Eden Fixman, Andreas Fobes and Cristina Saxton, as well as Julia Vaccina for doing the background character designs, my supervision lecturer, Luis Cook for his amazing guidance, and Lydia Augousti for doing the wonderful music! I wouldn’t have been able to make the film what it is without their help.’
Lucy Izzard, Animation Director at Aardman, presented the prize and praised the exceptionally high quality of all nominated films.
UWE students also swept up multiple craft awards, which recognise their fantastic work in key aspects of animation. It was a great night for collaborative films, as students Lily Goodwin, Ruby Black, Julia Henauer, and Cleo Parker’s second year film ‘The Big Top’ won a craft award for model making, and the team are already working on their next project together. ‘The Alan Ankles Experience’, by Tom Cushing and Tish Marsh, won a craft award for Sound, and Hoching Kwok was nominated for the main animation award for ‘Prince Edward’. Composer Megan Cunnington also composed the music for two award winning films, ‘The Big Top’ and Hazel Boxall’s ‘A Miraculous Midnight.’ UWE student Felix Surplus won a craft award for production design for ‘Flotsam and Jetsam’, while graduates Hazel Boxall and Julia Vaccina also bagged craft awards for their films in visual design and writing.
Congratulations to all our winners and nominees, and best of luck to Alison in the national awards!
